Event Management: Love & Lessons

When venturing into a new career, you may not know what to expect, however you are hopeful that this new career brings fulfillment and you grow to love it 😍.

It's the same way I felt when I first started my journey in event management. One year later and 13 events executed, I more than happy to share the lessons and what I've come to love about event management.

Therefore, I'm bringing you 5 lessons I've learned and 5 reasons I love event management.

5 LESSONS I'VE LEARNT FROM EVENT MANAGEMENT

1) Attention to details:

For someone who can be a little carefree, paying attention to details is one hard lesson I’m still learning. Your client wants a perfect event, therefore, you have no choice than to pay attention to the slightest details. You need to have a keen eyes on every detail of your event.

2)  Anticipate:

On my work table I have the words immediately but carefully. This is to help push away procrastination and also pay attention to details. You might want to put off somethings for later because you feel they are not really urgent, the more things you put off, the more chaotic your work would be when you decide to do them. You may even miss out the important things. So instead of procrastinating, anticipate. Do the things that needs to be done and anticipate what task you need to carry out in the coming days.

3)  Documentation:

This is very important in event management. So many task needs to be complete, so many transactions needs to be made. You need to document every single activity,  so you don’t miss out the important stuff. It would be very difficult for you to remember every single activities and transactions to be made. An event diary would come in handy.

4)  Negotiation:

Here, I learnt how to calculate discounts, to profile clients worthy of discounts and how to get/give the best prices that favors everyone involved in my event. It’s a bit tricky and there is a lot of calculations, BODMAS, but provided the figures are accurate and everyone is happy with the figures, my work is done🤷‍♀️.

5)  Budgeting:

I really don’t like mathematics hence my issues with negotiating and budgeting, but you cannot run away from this tasks as an event manager. Budgeting is very important because you don’t want to end up in debts after the event. You also want to give your best to your clients, so you have  to budget and make sure you work with the figures or cost your clients have given to you for their event.

5 REASONS I LOVE EVENT MANAGEMENT

1) Sense of Importance:

As an event manager you are very important and in control of the event. It is your duty that the event is as smooth as possible and all parties related to your event are satisfied.
The pressure that comes with this sense of duty, knowing that you have the responsibility of ensuring the smooth running of the event. Ensuring that all needs are met at your event and the knowledge that you cannot relent until your event is over and a success is what I love about event management.

2) Network Expansion:

Every event comes with the opportunity to meet new people and make new acquaintance. Event management provides the opportunity to expand your network.

3) Event Marketing:

This is one of the challenging parts of event management, but I really love it. Not all event needs to be market because you don't need to source for funds or sponsors. However, events that needs marketing not only give you the opportunity to sell the event, but also sell yourself to key decision makers if any organization you approach
Again, this is an opportunity to expand your network.

4) Honed Creativity:

There is a sense of pride and joy that comes with seeing your ideas come to reality and well executed. As an event manager you must be creative, from creating the event concept to designs, emails, letters, floor plan, your creativity must come into play and the more you apply your creativity, the more it improves.

5) Augments Problem Solving Skills:

It is almost impossible for events to go without glitches. The ability to quickly come up with a solution and ensure that the event continues smoothly makes you feel like a super hero or a genius.
