COVID-19 Global Pandemic: How Event Managers Can Innovate

Hello everyone,

It's a fact that COVID-19 global pandemic has taken a toll on so many businesses including event management.

Out of concern I would like to ask my fellow event managers and colleagues, how are you coping in this global pandemic crisis?

I know there are some many questions many questions going through your mind on how to remain relevant, the future of event management after COVID-19 and so on.

In this post I would try to answer some of the likely questions you may have been asking and I would also be giving you tips on how to remain relevant during this global pandemic.

1) WHAT IS EVENT MANAGEMENT DURING COVID-19?

Currently during this COVID-19 pandemic, there are no physical events. Cities are on lock down and people are asked to practice social distancing. Most events have been postponed indefinitely or even canceled, others are happening online. The online events are either webinars or Zoom events.

2) HOW CAN EVENT MANAGERS REMAIN RELEVANT DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC?

Event management comprises of a whole lot of services. There is catering, video and photography, graphic design, event marketing, venue decoration.
Some of these services are still very relevant during this pandemic. Therefore it is advisable to tweak your business into forms that are more relevant and essential during this period. It also advisable to work with your business strengths.
If the strength of your business is catering services, you could start up a food delivery service pending the time this crisis would be over.
Event marketing is still very essential for webinars and zoom events.
Graphics design is forever going to essential whether there is an event or not.

3) WHAT WOULD BE THE FUTURE OF EVENT MANAGEMENT AFTER COVID-19?

In my opinion, I see more more events happening once the global pandemic is over, however there are going to lots of changes and adaptation to what we have now.
I still see the implementation of social distancing at events, so events would be needing larger halls or venues so people are not clogged at events. Hand sanitizer are going to remain essential, they are likely going to become souvenirs at events, and I expect to have them at strategic spots at the venue, for instance venue entrance.
People are going to be setting priorities based on what event they feel is important for them to attend.
I also see lots of events with smaller numbers of guest and more intimate events, except for events that would necessarily pull crowds like concerts and conferences.

What is most important is that event managers don't shut down during this period and they should continue to deliver their best in whatever ways they innovate during the pandemic.
