5 Ways Event Managers Can Be Relevant In The COVID-19 Era

In this blog post, we join Mo, an amazing event manager who would teach us how to navigate as event managers in the pandemic.

" So, it is no longer news that we are in the middle of a pandemic - Miss Rona is in town -

and the events industry, which is largely dependent on face to face/physical human

interaction has taken a big hit. So what now? Do we event managers pack our

businesses up and find another gig that will thrive during this pandemic? I hear the face

mask business is booming this period.

Or do we stare this monster in the face and charge forward with our events?

The answer is yes but not quite.

We obviously cannot plan and execute physical events the way we know it, I mean

there are laws against these things now and you could end up in jail or something. So

here are 5 ways Mo’ thinks event managers can be relevant.

You’re probably thinking, who is Mo’ and why do i need to listen to her?

Well, I’m definitely not an authority in the event management industry. I refer to myself

as an events junkie. I’m crazy about events. I literally cannot see an event and sit still (I

should probably get that checked out). I love thinking up ideas and seeing them come to

life and I’ve been doing this professionally for 5 years now with about a 100 events

under my belt, I’ve learnt under different amazing teachers and events gurus and

applied myself so even though I’m not an authority in the industry, I must have learnt

something from all those events right? Yeah, I think so too.

So, lets get right into it. What’s the worst that can happen if you read this? Uhn?

1. New season, New me : Event managers most definitely need to have a new

outlook to this situation. We cannot afford to be gloomy, weighed down and

waiting for this to pass or else, we would lose a lot of time. Now is the time to

adapt. Modify ourselves, our thinking, our methods, our businesses to suit our

current reality. Some others have already started finding different ways of doing

things and if you keep waiting, you will be left behind.

Get up, take a good look at the situation, see it as a challenge, find the

opportunities that lie therein and restrategize. And oh, you need to start now cos

there really isn’t any time to waste.

2. Tech-no-lo-gy : Ha yes! That 4-syllable word. If there is one thing COVID 19

cannot affect, it is technology. There are new technological advancements all

around us. You need to get in tune with the new stuff and find out how you can

leverage on the available technology to help your events better. There's always

something new, update yourself.

3. Reach out : You need to carry your customers along. You cannot afford to

neglect your clientele at this crucial point of time. They are also being affected.

Reach out to them, show them that you care, help out anyway you can, send

welfare messages and packages. COMMUNICATE!

4. Information sharing : Event managers can stay relevant by constantly sharing

useful information. Useful tips, advice, how tos, did you knows etc is sure to keep

you top-of-mind in your client and potential client’s minds. People tend to

gravitate towards who feeds them the constant and consistent information.

5. Creative online experiences : Everyone is moving online. In fact thanks to

technology, almost all kinds of offline events can now be online and guess what,

it’s cheaper too.

Whether it’s a training or celebration or meeting or social event etc that you

intend to plan, it can definitely be done online. The major downside to online

events is that engagement can be limited, however, there is always a way around

this. You just need to think of creative ways to engage people and keep them

hooked. Encourage chatting and interactions among your online guests. Show

them something that they've never seen before or experienced. Make them go

wow!"
